CASS CHAEBYN SIN

(Close)

Cass Sin is a filmmaker and visual creative working across music videos, film, photography, and art direction. Born in Busan and raised in Japan for 18 years, she spent her early childhood in Kobe before moving to Tokyo during middle school. She is currently studying Film, TV and Multimedia at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul while undertaking an exchange at the University of the Arts London.

Her practice is driven by a fascination with visual beauty and the ways in which an image can transform the perception of reality. Naturally drawn to vivid colours, high exposure, and clarity, she gravitates towards imagery that feels luminous, expressive, and alive. At the same time, she is drawn to a certain dreamlike quality in images — a feeling that exists somewhere between the familiar and the surreal, where reality remains recognisable but takes on a heightened sense of beauty.

Rather than moving away from reality, she seeks to find and reinterpret the beauty already present within it. Light, colour, texture, and atmosphere become ways of shifting the ordinary into something more evocative. She is interested in images that feel tangible yet slightly unreal, retaining the spontaneity and imperfection of real life while carrying the softness and intensity of a dream. This balance between realism and idealisation continues to inform her visual sensibility and evolving approach to filmmaking.

Working primarily in music video direction, her practice extends to cinematography, photography, and art direction. Moving between these disciplines allows her to explore visual storytelling from different perspectives, whether through the construction of an entire visual world or the quiet observation of a passing moment. She approaches each project with an instinctive sensitivity to imagery, using composition, colour, movement, and light to establish a distinct visual atmosphere. Her process is guided by curiosity and experimentation, with an emphasis on discovering images that feel both aesthetically compelling and emotionally immediate.

Growing up across different cultural and social environments has profoundly shaped the way she observes the world. After being born in Korea, she spent her early years in Kobe, where an international upbringing exposed her to different cultures, perspectives, and ways of understanding the world. Moving to Tokyo during middle school marked another shift, as she entered a different educational and social environment and began navigating a new sense of belonging. These experiences made her increasingly aware of how one's surroundings can influence identity, perception, and the way people relate to one another. Moving between environments also taught her to look at familiar things from unfamiliar perspectives, finding beauty in details that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Now living and studying in London after moving from Japan to Korea, she continues to experience the process of adapting to unfamiliar places and navigating the space between different identities. This ongoing movement between cultures has cultivated an interest in the emotional relationships people form with places, the subtle ways environments shape personal perspectives, and the fleeting nature of experiences that can never be entirely revisited. Rather than viewing these transitions solely as changes in location, she approaches them as shifts in perception — moments in which the familiar becomes unfamiliar, and the unfamiliar gradually becomes part of oneself.

Her creative interests extend beyond the image itself to the feelings and memories it can hold. She is drawn to the tension between beauty and impermanence, between what is physically present and what exists only in memory or imagination. Whether directing a music video, photographing a person, or developing the visual language of a film, she is interested in creating work that invites the viewer to experience a moment rather than simply observe it.

With an interdisciplinary approach and an evolving visual language, Cass continues to explore the possibilities of image-making through colour, light, atmosphere, and experimentation. Her work is an ongoing pursuit of images that feel unmistakably real yet retain the fleeting, almost dreamlike quality of something remembered rather than simply seen.
